The Digital Britain report evoked strong disapproval from many quarters, as it was unable to provide a detailed and realistic strategy to improve broadband services in the UK. The Parliament has therefore decided to conduct a probe into the matter.
Many questions that were raised when the report came out will be answered after the outcome of the investigation. But as of now, there can be no clear-cut conclusion as the committee is going to be busy gathering information till the end of September
The subjects that will be covered during the course of the investigation have been confirmed by www.parliament.uk and are likely to encompass the uncertainties of the proposed 2MB speed. It is also expected that the investigation will cover the Government’s approach, which is aimed at converting the universal broadband access hopes to reality.
Even though a lot of subjects are expected to be assessed, the committee has failed to bring up the issue of the significance of upload speeds in the government’s plans.
The 50 pence levy which is supposed to help pay for the next generation access is also being looked into. The Parliament has said that it will make sure that the broadband service providers live up to their promises (click here to compare broadband), which they make while marketing their services.
